This is the best makeover project I have ever seen. The black paint and stain rock and so do you! As you go you will find the amount of pressure that allows the stain to absorb into the wood without being too much or too little. Don’t overthink and don’t overwork the wood stain.

The clear protective top coat was applied the next morning, and dried for another two hours. I used Minwax Polycrylic with a satin finish for the top coat on all the samples, because it dries clear and won't affect the final color. Check out this article for more information about polycrylic vs polyurethane, and which one to choose for your project. The first coat of stain was allowed to soak in for exactly two minutes, then the excess was wiped off with a shop paper towel. It can create an almost zebra look that is very popular and exotic at the same time. It adds a little flair to any piece of furniture without getting too flashy. Originally I thought of painting the cabinets a lighter cream color. We have had a few people that refinish cabinets come to our house. They have all said that our cabinets are great oak wood and to maintain the integrity of they wood, they would not paint them. In addition we are under a time frame.

The first reason is that when you’re painting something like a desk, or a chair, it’s going to need latex paint. You’re going to at least need two coats of primer and two coats of paint as well. That’s 4 coats, and you can feel the four layers of stuff you put on your furniture when you look at it. When you paint something, especially a nice piece of furniture, it looks painted, almost unnatural. But a stain brings a sleeker look and feel. This is also because you’re doing less to it.

Wipe away any marks that get on the painted portion of the furniture with a soft cloth immediately, otherwise the mark may dry and be visible. A black permanent marker is a viable substitute if a wood stain marker is not available. I'm hoping to stain my red oak peninsula cabinets black...or a black with a deep brown tint.

I am not sure how it would adhere to slick laminate even with sanding. You would have to do a test and wait a few days to see if it adheres or not. Most laminate surfaces need to be roughed up and primed with a gripping type primer before painting. I am planning to do my bedroom furniture black. I was going to paint til I came across your blog.

Many think that chalk paint has to be distressed or aged, but it does not. If you want black black, I would buy it and not make it yourself. Making black chalk paint sometimes ends up lighter since you need to add white powder to make it. You can roll it on and then use an angled brush on the rungs or chairs and table legs. For shine – use a non-yellowing water based poly like Minwax Polycrylic or Zinseer Ultimate Polyurthane to seal it.
